Q. Calculate the mole fraction of ethylene glycol $\left( C _{2} H _{6} O _{2}\right)$ in an aqueous solution containing $20 \%$ of $C _{2} H _{6} O _{2}$ by mass.

Solutions

Solution:

Weight of $C _{2} H _{6} O _{2}=20$

Molecular mass of $C _{2} H _{6} O _{2}$

$=2 \times 12+6+16 \times 2=62$

Weight of water $=100-20=80$

Mole fraction of $C _{2} H _{6} O _{2}$

$=\frac{\frac{20}{62}}{\frac{20}{62}+\frac{80}{18}}$

$=\frac{0.322}{0.322+4.44}$

$=\frac{0.322}{4.77}=0.068$
