Q. At constant temperature, the equilibrium constant $\left(\right.K_{p}\left.\right)$ for the decomposition reaction $N_{2}O_{4}\left(\right.\text{g}\left.\right)\rightleftharpoons2\left(NO\right)_{2}\left(\right.\text{g}\left.\right)$ is expressed by $K_{p}=\frac{\left(\right. 4 x^{2} P \left.\right)}{\left(\right. 1 - x^{2} \left.\right)}$ , where P = pressure, x = extent of decomposition. Which one of the following statements is true?

NTA AbhyasNTA Abhyas 2022

Solution:

$K_{p}$ can be written as:
$\text{K}_{\text{p}} = \frac{\left[\text{NO}_{2}\right]^{2}}{\left[\text{N}_{\text{2}} \text{O}_{4}\right]}$
With change of pressure, x will change in such a way that $K_{p}$ remains a constant.
