Q. At $88^{\circ} C$, benzene has a vapour pressure of $900$ torr and toluene has a vapour pressure of $360$ torr. Assuming that benzene and toluene form an ideal solution, calculate the mole fraction of benzene in a mixture if the total pressure is $500$ torr at $88^{\circ} C$.

Solutions

Solution:

$p _{ T }= p _{ A }^{0} x_{ A }+ p _{ B }^{0} x_{ B }= p _{ A }^{0} x_{ A }+ p _{ B }^{0}\left(1-x_{ A }\right)$
$\therefore 500=900 x_{ A }+360\left(1-x_{ A }\right)$
$\therefore 500=900 x_{ A }+360-360 x_{ A }$
$\therefore 140=540 x_{ A }$
Therefore, $x_{ A }=0.26$
