Q. Assertion (A) Dipole moment of phenol is smaller than that of methanol.
Reason (R) In phenol $C-O$ bond is less polar whereas in methanol, $C - O$ bond is more polar.

Alcohols Phenols and Ethers

Solution:

Dipole moment of phenol is smaller than that of methanol because in phenol, $Ar$ group is $-I$-effect showing group while in methanol - $CH _{3}$ is $+I$-effect group, resulting the greater polarity and hence greater dipole moment of methanol.
