Q. Arrange the following compounds in order of increasing dipole moment :
(I) Toluene
(II) $m$ -Dichlorobenzene
(III) $o$ -Dichlorobenzene
(IV) $p$ -Dichlorobenzene

Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure

Solution:

$o-, m-, p$ - derivatives have $\alpha=60^{\circ}, 120^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$ respectively, $p$ -derivative has zero dipole moment. Dipole moment of $m$ -dichlorobenzene is more than toluene.
