Q. An ideal gas is allowed to expand from $1\, L$ to $10\, L$ against a constant external pressure of $1$ bar. Calculate the work done in $kJ$.

Thermodynamics

Solution:

$w = -P\Delta V$
$= - \left(1 bar\right)\times\left(9 L\right)$
$= -\left(10^{5}pa\right)\times\left(9\times10^{-3}\right)m^{3}$
$= - 9 \times10^{2} \,Nm$
$= -900 J = - 0.9 kJ$
