Q. An ether solution of $PhCH _{3}(I), PhNH _{2}(I I)$ and $PhOH (I I I)$ is extracted with aqueous $NaOH$. The ether layer will contain what compound(s) after the extraction?

AMUAMU 2014

Solution:

When ethernal solution of $PhCH _{3}$ (I), $PhNH _{2}$ (II) $PhOH$ (III) is extracted with aqueous $NaOH$, only $PhOH$ reacts with $NaOH$ to form sodium phenoxide salt which layers separately whereas $PhCH _{3}$ and $PhNH _{2}$ cannot react with $NaOH$ and lie in ethernal layer.
