Q. An equilibrium mixture in a vessel of capacity $100\, litre$ contain $1\,mol$ $N_{2},$ $2\,mol$ $O_{2}$ and $3\,mol\,NO$ . Find number of moles of $O_{2}$ to be added, so that at new equilibrium the concentration of $NO$ is $0.04\,mol/lit.$ .

Solution:

$N_{2}+O_{2}\rightleftharpoons2NO$
$K=\frac{3^{2}}{2 \times 1}$ …(i)
$\underset{1 - z}{N_{2}}+\underset{2 + y - z}{O_{2}}\rightleftharpoons\underset{2 z + 3}{2 N O}$
$K=\frac{(3+2 z)^{2}}{(2+y-z)(1-z)}$ (ii)
Given, $3+2z=4$
$z=\frac{1}{2}$
(i) = (ii)
$y=\frac{101}{18}$
