Q. An electron in hydrogen atom after absorbing an energy photon jumps from energy state $n_1$ to $n_2$ Then it returns to ground state after emitting six different wavelengths in emission spectrum. The energy of emitted photons is either equal to, less than or greater than the absorbed photons. Then $n_1$ and $n_2$ are

Atoms

Solution:

From $n_2$ = 4, six lines are obtained in emission spectrum.
Now : $E_{4 - 2} = E_{adsorbed}$
$E_{4 \rightarrow 3} < E_{adsorbed}$
and $E_{4 - 1} E_{3 - 1}, E_{2 - 1} > E_{adsorbed}$
Hence, $n_1$ = 2 and $n_2$ = 4
