Q. An electric dipole of length $2\, cm$ is placed with its axis making an angle of $30^{\circ}$ to a uniform electric field $10^{5} \,N / C$. If it experiences a torque of $10 \sqrt{3}\, Nm$, then potential energy of the dipole

Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance

Solution:

$10 \sqrt{3}=P 10^{5} \frac{1}{2}$
$2 \sqrt{3} \times 10^{-4}=P$
$U=-2 \sqrt{3} \times 10^{-4} \times 10^{5} \times \frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}$
$U=-3 \times 10$
$U=-30 \,J$
