Q. An aeroplane was flying horizontally with a velocity of $720\, km / h$ at an altitude of $490\, m$. When it is just vertically above the target a bomb is dropped from it. How far horizontally it missed the target (in $m$)?

Motion in a Plane

Solution:

image
Horizontal velocity of plane $=720\, km / hr $
$=200\, m / s$.
Time taken by bomb to reach the surface
$y =\frac{1}{2} gt ^{2}$
$t ^{2}=\frac{2 y }{ g }=\frac{2 \times 490}{9.8}$
$t ^{2}=100\, \sec ; t =10\, \sec$
In this time interval horizontal distance travelled by bomb
$=v_{x} \times t=200 \times 10=2000\, m$
