Pauling and Corey gave $\alpha$-helix structure of protein. In this structure, the polypeptide backbone is tightly bound around an imaginary axis drawn longitudinally the middle of the helix and the R groups of amino acids residue protrude outward from the helical bone. Generally, about $1 / 4$ of all amino acid residues in polypetide are found in $\alpha$-helix.
