Q. Acetamide is treated with the following reagents separately. Which one of these would yield methyl amine?

IIT JEEIIT JEE 1983Aldehydes Ketones and Carboxylic Acids

Solution:

The reagent which can convert $- CONH _{2}$ group into $- NH _{2}$ group is used for this reaction. Among the given reagents only $NaOH / Br _{2}$ converts $- CONH _{2}$ group to $- NH _{2}$ group, thus it is used for converting acetamide to methyl amine. This reaction is called Hoffman bromide reaction.
$CH _{3} CONH _{2}+ NaOH + Br _{2} \to CH _{3} NH _{2}+ NaBr + Na _{2} CO _{3}+ H _{2} O$
