Q. A travelling microscope has a main scale graduated in $\frac{1}{2}\,mm$. $50$ vernier divisions coincide with $49$ main scale divisions. What will be the reading if the main scale reads $7.45\, cm$ and the $29^{th}$ division of the vernier coincides with the main scale division ?

Physical World, Units and Measurements

Solution:

Least count $= 1\,MSD - 1\,VSD$
$=0.5\,mm-0.5\,mm-\left(\frac{49}{50}\right)\left(0.5\,mm\right)$
$=0.001\,cm$
Reading $= 7.45 + 29 \times 0.001 = 7.479 \,cm$
