Q. A system consisting of two masses connected by a massless rod lies along the $ x- $ axis. A 0.4 kg mass is at a distance $ x=2\text{ }m $ while a 0.6 kg mass is at a distance $ x=7\text{ }m $ . The. $ x- $ coordinate of the centre of mass is

Solution:

The $ x- $ coordinate of centre of mass $ x=\frac{{{m}_{1}}{{x}_{1}}+{{m}_{2}}{{x}_{2}}}{{{m}_{1}}+{{m}_{2}}} $ Here, $ {{m}_{1}}=0.4\,kg,{{x}_{1}}=2m $ $ {{m}_{2}}=0.6\,kg,{{x}_{2}}=7m $ Hence, $ x=\frac{0.4\times 2+0.6\times 7}{0.4+0.6} $ $ x=5m $
