Q. A substance of mass $49.53\, g$ occupies $1.5 \quad cm ^{3}$ of volume. The density of the substance (in $g\, cm ^{-3}$ ) with correct number of significant figures is

KCETKCET 2017Physical World, Units and Measurements

Solution:

Mass of the substance $m = 4 9 . 5 3\, g$
Volume of the substance $V = 1 . 5 cm ^{3}$ Density of the substance $d =\frac{ m }{ V }$ $\therefore d =\frac{49.53}{1.5}=33.02 gcm ^{-3}$
As $49.53$ has four significant figures whereas $1.5$ has two significant figures. Thus, the value of the density of the substance must have two significant figures. Thus, the density of the substance $d = 3 . 3 \,g \,cm ^{-3}$.
