Q.
A neutral compound with molecular formula $ C_{3}H_{8}O $ evolves $ H_{2} $ when treated with sodium metal and gives iodoform test. The compound is
Uttarkhand PMTUttarkhand PMT 2007
Solution:
Since, the compound evolves $H _{2}$ on treatment with $Na$ metal, it must contain an $OH$ group.
Further, since it gives iodoform test, therefore, it must contain the grouping $CH _{3} CHOH -$ or $CH _{3} CO -$.
Both these reactions are given by compound $\left( CH _{3}\right)_{2} CHOH$ or $CH _{3} CHOHCH _{3}$.
