Q. A layer of benzene $\left(\mu_{1}=1.5\right) 6\, cm$ deep floats on water $\left(\mu_{2}=1.33\right) 4\, cm$ deep. When viewed vertically through air the apparent distance (in $cm$ ) of the bottom of the vessel below the surface of the benzene will be ?

Ray Optics and Optical Instruments

Solution:

image
Image of bottom after refraction at benzene water surface is formed at
$=\left(\frac{4}{4 / 3}\right)(1.5)$
$=4.5\, cm$ below benzene water surface Now for refraction at benzene air surface, this acts as object and final image is formed at
$=\left(\frac{10.5}{1.5}\right)(1)=7\, cm$ below benzene-air surface.
