Q. (a) $H_2 O_2 + O_3 \rightarrow H_2O + 2O_2$
(b) $H_2 O_2 + Ag_2O \rightarrow 2Ag + H_2O + O_2$
Role of hydrogen peroxide in the above reactions is respectively -

AIPMTAIPMT 2014Redox Reactions

Solution:

(a) $H _{2} O _{2}+ O _{3} \rightarrow H _{2} O +2 O _{2}$
In this reaction, $O _{3}$ is reduced into $O ^{-2}$ ion.
(b) $H _{2} O _{2}+ Ag _{2} O \rightarrow 2 Ag + H _{2} O + O _{2}$
In this reaction, $Ag _{2} O$ is reduced to $Ag$.
Hence, $H _{2} O _{2}$ acts as reducing agent in both the reactions.
