Q. A gaseous mixture of propane and butane of volume $3$ litre on complete combustion produces $11.0$ litre $CO_2$ under standard conditions of temperature and pressure. The ratio of volume of butane to propane is :

Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry

Solution:

Suppose, the volume of propane $=V L$
$\underset{v}{\therefore C _3 H _8( g )}+5 O _2( g ) \longrightarrow \underset{5v}{3 CO _2( g )}+ \underset{3v}{4 H _2 O (\ell)}$
$C _4 H _{10}( g )+\frac{13}{2} O _2( g ) \longrightarrow 4 CO _2( g )+5 H _2 O (\ell)$
$(3-v) \frac{13}{2}(3-v) 4(3-v)$
Total volume of $CO _2$ produced $=10 L$;
$3 K+4(3-F)=11 ;$
$ \therefore V=1$
$\therefore$ Volume of butane $=(3-1)=2 L$
Thus, the ratio of volume of butane to propane. $=2: 1$
