Q. A gas cylinder containing cooking gas can withstand a pressure at 14.9 atm. The pressure gauge of the cylinder indicates 12 atm. at $27^\circ C$ . Due to a sudden fire in the building its temperature starts rising. At what temperature will the cylinder explode?

Solution:

$\text{T} = 273 + 27 = 300 \, \text{K}$

$\frac{P_{1}}{T_{1}}=\frac{P_{2}}{T_{2}}$

Since volume of the cylinder is constant

$T_{2}=\frac{T_{1} P_{2}}{P_{1}}=\frac{300 \times 14.9}{12}$

$=372.5 K$
