Q. A block of mass 0.1 kg is held against a wall by applying a horizontal force of 5 N on it. If $\mu,$ between the wall· and the block is 0.5, the magnitude of the frictional force acting on the block is

COMEDKCOMEDK 2012Laws of Motion

Solution:

Refer figure.
Limiting value of frictional force,
$f _{\max }=\mu N =.5 \times 5=2.5 N$
Now, value of $mg =0.1 \times 9.8=0.98 N$
$f _{\max }> mg$
then frictional force acting on block is
$f = mg =0.98 N$
