Q. A 3cm long copper wire is stretched , to increase its length by 0.3 cm . find the lateral strain in the wire, if the Poisson's ratio for is 0.26.

Mechanical Properties of Solids

Solution:

L = 3cm , $\Delta L = 0.3 \, cm , \sigma = 0.26$
longitudinal strain $\frac{\Delta L}{L} = \frac{0.3}{3} = 0.1$
$\sigma = \frac{later \, strain}{Longitudinal \, strain}$
The Lateral Strain = $\sigma \times $ Longitudinal Strain = $0.26 \times 0.1 = 0.026$
