When an injury happen the blood clotting commences with the formation of a substance called prothrombin activator which converts prothrombin into thrombin in the presence of calcium (factor IV). This thrombin converts fibrinogen into fibrin and thus forming the clot. Inactive fibrinogen is converted into activated fibrinogen by thrombin due to the loss of two pairs of polypeptide from each fibrinogen molecule and this activated fibrinogen is called fibrin monomer.
