Division Bryophyta is also known as the amphibian plant group. They are evolved than Thallophyta members. The following are the salient features of this group of plants:
1. They have an undifferentiated body organization, which is a haploid gametophyte. However, root-like rhizoids are seen, the stem-like erect part is found and leaf-like parenchymatous appendages are found.
2. The sporophyte is diploid and is parasitic on the gametophyte.
3. Gametophytes grow in shady, damp places near the water body.
4. For the anchorage, rhizoids are developed, which may be either unicellular (in Hepaticopsida) or multicellular (in Bryopsida) members.
5. Hepaticopsida members may not have leafy appendages. Instead, they have a dorso-ventrally flat, thalloid organization.
6. They do not have conducting elements, like xylem and phloem.
7. They show the presence of an intermediate embryo stage in their life cycle.
8. The sporophytes form the spores which undergo meiosis and thus, the gametophytic generation is reverted. Funaria is a moss, which comes under Bryopsida.
