Q. Which part of leaf is sensitive to sleep and shock movements?
Solution:
A group of cells that are present at the base of a leaf or a leaflet which has a swollen appearance is known as a pulvinus. The swollen appearance is due to the loose water, which brings about the change in the leaf position. It is found in the leguminous plants, Mimosa pudica, mango leaves, and even in the Fabaceae family. The folding or sleep movements of the leaves due to the darkness is known as nyctinastic movements. This type of leaf base helps in the nyctinastic movement in plants. Seismonastic movement occurs in response to shock or change in turgor pressure that causes folding of leaflets.
