Solution:

The innermost surface of blood vessels is covered by a layer of simple squamous epithelium, known as, Endothelium. Simple squamous cells are flattened in cross section and in surface view are seen as polygonal shape cells ,which interlock with each other and hence are called as Pavement Epithelium . Endothelium allows for the passive transport of nutrients and metabolites across the capillary wall. This endothelial layer also provides a smooth surface so that the formed elements of blood can travel without any damage and hence , apart from blood vessels the inner lining of the chambers of the heart is also lined by endothelium.
