In an anther, cells of endothecium develops fibrous thickening from the inner tangential walls towards the outer wall. Due to hygroscopic nature, endothecium helps in dispersal of microspores. Some endothecium cells, opposite the partition between two sporangia, become thin-walled and constitute the stomium, the site through which pollen grains are released during dehiscence.
