Cerebral cortex is the folds of grey matter surrounding the cerebral hemispheres. It is called grey matter due to its greyish appearance imparted due to the neuron cell bodies concentrated there. It contains motor areas and sensory areas. There are also large regions that are neither clearly sensory nor motor in function and are known as association areas. They are responsible for complex functions like intersensory, associations, memory and communication.
