A small group of xerophytic species,e.g., Selaginella lepidophylla and S. pilifera, are cespitose in habit and when dry they coil closely together their rosette like shoots, by a cohesion mechanism, to form a balllike structure and quickly unroll into a graceful green plant when moisture is readily available.
