The total biomass of each trophic level can be represented by using a pyramid of biomass. In most ecosystems, the pyramid of biomass is an upright one. But in the aquatic ecosystem, the biomass pyramid is inverted. This is because the primary producers in the aquatic ecosystem are the phytoplanktons. These phytoplanktons are micro organisms and thus have very little biomass as compared to the aquatic animals who consume them and occupy the successive trophic levels in the food chain.
