Sodium meta aluminate is precipitated in the form of Al(OH)3 or Al2O3⋅xH2O.
i.e hydrated aluminium hydroxide by passing CO2 gas. 2NaAlO2+CO2(g)+3H2O(ℓ)⟶OrAl2O3⋅kH2O2Al(OH)3↓+Na2CO3
In electrolytic reduction of Al2O3 by Hall-Haroult process,
cryolite (Na3AlF6) and fluorspar (CaF2) are added in order to reduce the melting temperature of Al2O3.
Anode is made up of graphite,
So, C(s)+2O2−⟶CO2(g)+4e−
Cathode is a steel vessel lined with graphite.
