Alleles that are located close together on a chromosome have a tendency to be inherited together as they are less likely to undergo separation during chromosomal crossover in meiosis. Such alleles or genes are said to be genetically linked. The theory of linkage was given by T.H. Morgan who used the Drosophila as subject for inheritance studies. His work disproved the Mendel law of independent assortment.
