The van-Arkel method of refining zirconium involves removal of all oxygen and nitrogen impurities.
In this method, the impure metal is heated with iodine in a sealed vessel, so that metal forms volatile metallic iodide and impurities do not react with iodine.
The metallic iodide is then decomposed when purified further at higher temperature.
