With regard to transfusions of whole blood or packed red blood cells, individuals with O type negative blood are often called universal donors, and those with type AB positive blood are called universal recepients, however, these terms are only generally true with respect to possible reactions of the recepients anti-A and anti-B antibodies to transferred red blood cells, and also possible sensitigztion to Rh D antigens.
