When two interfering waves meet in the same phase, resultant intensity is maximum. The resultant intensity due to two waves I1 and I2
and having phase difference ϕ between them is given by I=I1+I2+2I1I2cosϕ
For maximum intensity, ϕ=0 ∴Imax=(I1+I2)2
Given, I1=I2=I ∴Imax=(I+I)2=4I
Maximum intensity is also known as constructive interference.
