For train I,
$u_1=40m/s$
As, $v_1=u_1+a_{1}t$
$\Rightarrow 0=40+a_1(10)$
$\Rightarrow a_1=\frac{-40}{10}=-4m/s^2$
For train II
$u_2=-20m/s$
As,$v_2=u_2+a_{2}t$
$\Rightarrow 0=-20+a_2(8)$
$\Rightarrow a_2=\frac{20}{8}=\frac{10}{4}m/s^2$
For train I,
$v_1^2=u_1^2-2a_1{s}_1$
$\Rightarrow 0=u_1^2-2a_1{s}_1$
$\Rightarrow s_1=\frac{u_1^2}{2a_1}=\frac{(40{)}^2}{2\times 4}$
$=\frac{1600}{8}=200m$
For train II,
$v_2^2=u_2^2-2a_2{s}_2$
$\Rightarrow 0=u_2^2-2a_2{S}_2$
$\Rightarrow s_2=\frac{u_2^2}{2a}$
or, $s_7=\frac{(-20{)}^2}{2\left(\frac{10}{4}\right)}$
or, $s_2=\frac{400\times 2}{10}$
or, $s_2=80m$
Total distance covered by both trains,
$s=s_1+s_2$
$s=200+80$
$s=280m$
$\therefore$Separation between the trains
$=$ Remaining distance
$=300-280=20m$
