Solution:

Cranial nerves are 12 in number. They are written in roman numbers from anterior to the posterior. These nerves are part of the peripheral nervous system and it can be sensory, motor, and mixed. The trochlear nerve is the fourth cranial nerve and it is entirely motor in function. Each of the fourth pair of cranial nerves supplies to the superior oblique muscle of the eyeball. It is the longest and thinnest cranial nerve.
It arises from the dorsal aspect of the midbrain. It helps in turning the eyeball on the lateral side and downward side. It is the only cranial nerve that crosses completely on the other side. They arise from the contralateral nucleus. If the trochlear nerve is damage then the following symptoms appear:
1. Difficulty in going downstairs
2. vertigo
3. Double vision
