Biogas is a type of biofuel having a mixture of gases which is naturally produced by decomposition of organic matter by anaerobic process. It mainly contains methane and carbon dioxide. Food waste, domestic waste, animal waste form the organic matter used for biogas production. It is produced in a biogas plant where the decomposed organic matter can be used as manure for agriculture purpose. The bacterial group Methanogens are utilized in its productions.
IARI and Khadi and Village Industries commission are credited with the technology for biogas production from cow-dung in India. Biogas is a cheaper renewable source of fuel which can be used for cooking. Biogas is Eco-friendly.
GAIL, ONGC and IOC are involved with the fossil fuel and natural gas extraction in India.
