Q.
The resistance of the wire is R1 . It is now stretched (keeping the volume constant) without breaking so that its length becomes three times. Now the resistance becomes R2 , then what is the value of R2:R1?
For a given wire, its resistance R∝Al ∴R1∝r12l1
The wire is stretched such that l2=3l1
But density is unchanged. ∴ Density =VM=4πr12l1M=4πr22l2M ⇒r22=l2l1r12=3r12…..(i)(∵l2=3l1)
Now, R2∝r22l2 ∴R2∝r129l1....(ii)
From (i) and (ii) ∴R2:R1=9:1
