The plants which send their roots upto the fringe of the water table due to deficiency of air are called phreatophytes. Examples: Populus deltoides, Alhagi pseudalhagi, Tamarix, Prosopis cineraria, etc. These phreatophytes root go deeper to the groundwater or water table. The upper part of the groundwater is the water table which is completely saturated with water table soil and excluded with air. Normally, phreatophytes grow in the areas which are low in their water content like deserts or arid zones.
