During metaphase, chromosomes become more distinct due to maximum contraction.These are now ready to enter anaphase where they divide at the point of centromere. Chromo somes are arranged at the equatorial plate due to spindle fibre attachment during metaphase and during anaphase, sister chromatid move towards opposite pole (because of contraction of spindle fibres) and divide.
