The respiratory system in man consists of a system of air passages and a pair of lungs. The air passages can be functionally divided into conducting division and respiratory division. Anatomically the respiratory system is divided into the upper respiratory system and lower respiratory system.
The conducting division consists of a pair of nostrils, nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, primary bronchi, secondary bronchi, tertiary bronchi and terminal bronchioles. The rest of the conducting division and the entire respiratory division constitute the lower respiratory system. The respiratory division consists of respiratory bronchioles and alveoli.
The pathway of movement of inhaled air is as follows:
Nostrils → Pharynx → Larynx → Trachea → Bronchi → Bronchioles → Alveoli
