Both the peroxomonosulphuric acid (H2SO5) and peroxodisulphuric acid (H2S2O8) have peroxide linkage and have the following structures.
Thus, the oxidation number of S in H2SO5 is calculated as: ( for H)2×(+1)+( for S)X+ for O3×(−2)× (for peroxide) 2×(−1)=0 2+x−6−2=0 ∴x=+6
Thus, oxidation number of S in H2S2O8 is calculated as ( for H2×(+1)+( for S)2×(x)+( for O)6×(−2)+(for peroxide)2×(−1)=0 2+2x−12+2=0 ∴x=+6
