Phagocytes are cells that are able to engulf and breakdown foreign particle, cell debris and disease producing microorganisms. The most active phagocytic cells, neutrophils and macrophages, besides destroying the microbes, also eat up the dead tissue cells. They are popularly called the soldiers and scavengers of the body.
