The joint between atlas (the first cervical vertebra) and axis (the second cervical vertebra) a synovial joint. It is a type of pivot joint. The odontoid process of axis acts as a pivot on which atlas can rotate. This type of joint allows considerable amount of movement. A fluid filled synovial cavity is present between the articulating surfaces of two bones.
