G2 is the gap phase, which is the third sub-phase of the interphase in the cell cycle. The G1 is the growth phase followed by the Synthesis phase and then the Gap phase where the cell is preparing itself for division and protein synthesis takes place after which the cell is ready to undergo mitosis. It is in the gap phase that the microtubules are assembled and later used for the mobilization of the chromosomes in the M phase.
