Since specific and different nitrogen bases occur on the two DNA chain, the latter are complementary. It is because of specific base pairing with a purine lying opposite to a pyrimidine. This makes the two chains 2 nm thick. A larger sized purine lies opposite to the smaller-sized pyrimidine, A opposite to T and C opposite to G. This gives uniform width throughout DNA.
