Q.
The dispersive powers of the materials of the two lenses are in the ratio 3:4. If the achromatic combination of these two lenses is of So focal length 60cm, then the focal lengths of the component lenses are:
Let focal length of the convex and concavelenses be f1 and f2.
In order that this is achromatic combination of lenises, we have f11+f21=F1
Given, F=60cm ∴601=f11+f21...(i)
Also, condition for lens combination to be achromatic, we have f1ω1+f2ω2=0 ⇒ω2ω1=−f2f1
where, ω1 and ω2 are dispersive powers.
we have given, ω2ω1=43 ∴43=−f2f1 ⇒f2=−34f1...(ii)
Putting this value in (i), we have 601=f11−4f13 ⇒f1=+15cm f2=−20cm
Hence, one is a convex lens and the other is a concave lens.
