Denitrification is the reduction of nitrate to gaseous compounds of nitrogen. Under anaerobic conditions, some microorganisms use nitrate and other oxidized ions as a source of oxygen, e.g., Pseudomonas denitrificans, Thiobacillus denitrificans, Micrococcus denitrificans, etc.
